Pancake Day

With half term and pancake day approaching we decided to give ourselves a treat and whip up some fluffy American-style pancakes. First we wrote out the ingredients.

Then we put the flour and the baking powder into a bowl.

Then in a different bowl we separated the eggs. We cracked the eggs on the side of the clean dry bowl.  We tipped the yolk from one half of the shell to the other, over the bowl, so that the white goes in the bowl, while the yolk remains in the shell. Put the yolks in a different bowl.

We put the egg yolks and the milk into the flour mixture and combined them.

Then we whipped up the egg whites using a whisk. The idea is to whip lots of air into them, it takes a while and might make your arm ache a bit! We whisked them until they were thick and formed stiff peaks.

We gently folded the whipped egg whites into the rest of the mixture - you want to keep the air in the mixture so the pancakes puff up nicely when you cook them.

We melted a knob of butter in a pan.

We spooned a ladleful of the mixture into the hot pan and waited a few minutes while it cooked.

Then we flipped the pancake so it was brown on both sides.

We added some fruit or syrup before eating. Yummy!
